Is Book 6 necessary for TOCFL Band C?
Book 5 alone prepares you for TOCFL Band C Advanced 1. Book 6 targets Advanced 2 — the highest band, covering classical Chinese elements, literary comprehension, and near-native academic writing. Most learners who are not pursuing academic or literary careers complete the series at Book 5 or early Book 6.
How many total words does completing all six books give you?
Completing all six books gives you approximately 1,800 vocabulary items in the Dangdai curriculum. Combined with the high-frequency characters you will have encountered in reading passages and grammar examples, most graduates of the full series operate at a functional vocabulary of 2,500–3,000 words.
